Matrimandir, Auroville

"Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity."

Roger Anger (Architect of Auroville) The act of unison is difficult to express in words. It is not merely cooperation amongst individuals, but a philosophy under which people can build relationships and mutual understandings. Most of all however, it makes joint action not only possible but effective. Unity in itself therefore, is not an end-point but the medium through which all action materializes. This unique experience is embodied wholeheartedly and with immense grace in the small township of Auroville in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Luxe Destination
Universally one-of-a-kind, Auroville is located 150km South of Chennai and approximately 10km North of Pondicherry. With a diameter of 5km built around a Banyan tree, a French lady named Mira Alfassa (famously known as “Mother”) established the area and its purpose.
The Charter enlists four central points:
  • Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.

  • Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.

  • Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.

  • Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.

Since its inauguration on the 28th of February, 1968, 120 nations have brought soil from their homeland to collect in the Amphitheatre - - an act that recognizes and accepts humanity, diversity and the bridge between the two.

Land, in Auroville, belongs to no one and yet can be inhabited by anyone who agrees with the principles above. Religion and politics have no place within the boundaries. All inhabitants practice and further various disciplines, from sports and the arts to science, environment sustainability, agriculture, handicrafts, humanities and Spirituality; to name only a few. The intention is simple: everyone serves each other and themselves in order to make the world a better place; a place in which human potential and goodwill are maximized. It is truly the epitome of humankind’s sincere dedication to his or her fellow human beings.

Slightly off center-point rests the Matrimandir: an enormous, gold plated spherical architectural marvel. Inside the globe, a spiraling ramp leads upwards to a marbled room, circular in shape, and in pure and infinite white. In the center of the room, a crystal ball reflects a single ray of sunlight which falls from the top of the structure. If Matrimandir is the “symbol of the Divine’s answer to man’s inspiration for perfection”, as Mother Mira intended, then the crystal ball is “a symbol of future realisation”. It is a place especially made for man to find his consciousness.

Upon entering the room, silence is the word. All visitors are requested to wear white socks as provided, and sit on cushions that are placed between tall pillars (circling the crystal ball). The air is fresh and a soft, air-conditioned breeze creates a peaceful and meditative atmosphere. The crystal ball is transfixing and the silence, an escapable route into the inner-realm.
A once in a lifetime opportunity in a location dedicated to universal unity makes Matrimandir and Auroville a Luxe-India recommendation.
