Luxe “In the Know”
The history of chewing betel and areca nut can be traced back to the pre-Vedic Harappan empire (circa 2600 BC). Kings had special attendants carrying the Paan Daan, the box of ingredients for a good chewing session. In ancient India, women used to chew paan to acquire redness on their lips and mouth, serving as a primitive lipstick. Some regarded Paan as a medicinal substance and an aphrodisiac drug. Paan eating was taken to its zenith of cultural refinement in the pre-partition era in North India, mainly Lucknow, where paan eating became an elaborate cultural custom, and was seen as a ritual of the utmost sophistication.

So on your visit to India, do try Paan and enjoy its peculiar yet mouth freshening taste!
