Mary Budden Estate, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttaranchal

As an administrative centre under the British, Almora's bracing climate and green forests attracted many colonial officers to establish retreats in the adjacent hills. Almora is 32 km from Binsar and the high profile officers built estates consisting of large bungalows set within several acres of land surrounded by forest. Over time the estates changed hands and were eventually passed on to Indian owners. Today there are only 5 privately owned estates within the sanctuary and Mary Budden Estate is one of these. Mary Budden Estate is today a perfectly preserved and renovated boutique cottage which takes you straight back into the colonial era.
